Arwen Daniels talks with us about how MoonClerk has helped streamline the tuition collection at her studio, Arwen Daniels Dance Academy, in Southern California.
Can you tell us a little about what you do?
I own a small dance studio in Solana Beach, California that I opened in September of 2012. My mission is to create well-rounded dancers with a strong technical base and a positive body image.
What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
I teach most of the daily classes in jazz, ballet, and contemporary, supervise my other teachers in tumbling and lyrical dance, teach over a dozen private lessons a week, register all new students, and keep track of all financials for the studio. I also have two competition teams, one senior and one junior, that compete from late fall through spring on the weekends all over Southern California.
How did you get started?
I was working at a local private school as a teacher’s aid in a classroom, just trying to get back on my feet after I was in a horrific car accident in 2006 with my (now) husband Adam, where a concrete block came through my windshield and shattered most of the bones in my face. I couldn’t dance, let alone walk, for months following the accident, so I started at the school in order to keep moving forward in my life. Slowly, I formed an after-school dance program at the school, which grew into over 200 students at 2 locations, and there was a group of dancers that were ready to compete. It was time for me to find my own space and train my dancers without any restrictions with the correct flooring and mirrors.
What have been some key factors in growing your business?
I haven’t had to advertise at all; it seems that positive word of mouth is the best way for growth to happen organically. I expand my schedule and add a class or two every time my current classes fill up, and I added a second competition team this spring to motivate my younger dancers.
What do you use MoonClerk for?
MoonClerk has been great for us to take automatic tuition payments at the beginning of every month. I don’t have to collect checks and take credit card payments in-between classes anymore. I can now focus on teaching dance, instead of worrying about keeping payments current.
Before MoonClerk, did you use another payment system?
We used Square, which was convenient to take credit cards, but took time and energy away from my classes and teaching dance because I had to charge each student’s fees every time they came.
What made you decide to use MoonClerk?
We knew we needed an automatic payment system, and similar companies we researched seemed very complicated and lengthy. MoonClerk was quick and simple.
What was your experience when switching and getting started with MoonClerk?
Getting started was pretty easy; some clients didn’t want to enter information online at first, but one-by-one, once people switched over, I have had no problems whatsoever.
What do you like about MoonClerk?
MoonClerk has saved me hours of time every month, and I can focus on what I should be doing, which is teaching dance and helping kids grow. MoonClerk is hands-down one of the best decisions we have made for our business for the price that we’re charged every month. MoonClerk takes all the worry away from collecting the tuition payment from each family at the beginning of the month. Now that I receive my funds in just 2 days, I know the money is in my account when all of my own bills need to be paid.
Any advice for others who are in similar industries?
I would advise any business similar to mine, that is in a growing stage, to use MoonClerk. The price is great and it’s easy to understand, so you can focus on your talents and what you offer to your clients instead of collecting money. It is easy-to-use, simple to follow, and your data is available online at any time to track growth from month to month. I should have signed up for MoonClerk as soon as I opened my business! It would have saved me hours and hours of worry from the very beginning!
