John Burke, cofounder of Craft Gin Club, talks with us about his experience in using MoonClerk to power the subscription billing for his consumer goods subscription club.
Can you tell us a little about what Craft Gin Club?
We are a membership club for craft gin lovers. Every month, we feature one full bottle of an exclusive Gin of the Month so that our Members can taste a wide variety of craft gins throughout the year. For each Gin of the Month, we also publish our monthly GINNED! Magazine, which includes all of the information about the gin – interviews with the distillers, tasting notes, bespoke cocktail recipes and food pairings, etc. – as well as loads of fun feature articles in some way related to the gin and distillery with topics ranging from pop culture to history and science to literature. We like to send our Members the best gins as well as the best information with which to strike up conversations when tasting the gin.
What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
We’re a two-man team so we both do a bit of everything, from customer service – the most crucial element of our business – to social media interaction, sourcing and tasting the best craft gins, creating stellar content about our craft gins, ad buying, website design, accounting… literally a bit of everything.
How did you get started?
Over a few gin and tonics, of course! As gin lovers ourselves we knew we wanted to work with the micro distillers that are making amazing gins and help to share them with people around the UK, and soon the world!
What have been some key factors in growing your business?
We spend a lot of time speaking with our Members, which not only reinforces our relationship with them but is also a lot of fun. We get to learn about what they do, where their interest in gin comes from, hear how they’re enjoying their craft gins and even get to transfer their feedback to our distiller partners. We love that personal element and think it’s been a real boon to our business. Otherwise, working with the best exclusive craft gins has certainly helped.
What do you use MoonClerk for?
MoonClerk helps us to keep track of our Members, their Membership plans and their recurring payments. We offer three plans – Monthly, Bi-Monthly, and Quarterly – which is a snap to set up in MoonClerk. How has MoonClerk improved or helped your business?
One crucial element to using MoonClerk is that it helps us to immediately see if our Members have paid for their bottle of craft gin. Credit cards often change or expire and MoonClerk alerts us and our customers to these issues. This way, we can contact our Members in time before our monthly shipment to make sure that they update their cards and receive their Gin of the Month.
Any advice for others who are in similar industries?
For those running a consumer goods subscription business, MoonClerk provides an easy-to-use platform for accepting recurring payments, running promotions and keeping track of customers.
