How GroupAhead Tripled Its Business Since Starting To Use MoonClerk

Brian Glick, Co-founder and CEO of GroupAhead, talks with us about how using MoonClerk to accept recurring payments has helped triple his business.
Can you tell us a little about what GroupAhead does?
We provide a group app maker that enables groups to build their own dedicated apps. Typical groups range from fraternities and sororities, to unions, to churches, to professional associations.
Their apps go into the App Store & Play Store, and members download them to connect and communicate with one another. (We think it’s the easiest and most effective way to manage a member-based organization and increase engagement.)
What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
I wear the CEO hat and do a bit of everything – mostly focusing on sales, customer success, and figuring out how to help the product and the company get to the next level.
How did you get started?
My co-founder Julian Frumar and I were at Google for many years, and we saw plenty of ways for people to connect online one-to-one with others, and plenty of ways for people to connect online with massive groups of people, but we didn’t see a lot of good solutions in the middle: Relatively small organizations of people who share a passion and get together often in the real world.
These organizations have challenges combining things like email (noisy), large social networks (also noisy), calendars, spreadsheets, etc. It ends up being hard for regular members to stay on top of it all, which keeps them from participating as much as they otherwise would.
We try to bring that all together, plus build it for today’s mobile-focused world.
What have been some key factors in growing your business?
We’ve seen the most growth from word-of-mouth: when we do a good enough job with the product and our support, people see their apps take on a life of their own, and they recommend us to other organizations as a useful tool.
What do you use MoonClerk for?
Building an app on our platform means subscribing to a monthly or yearly plan; we use MoonClerk to help manage that process and accept recurring payments from our clients.
Before MoonClerk, did you use another payment system?
We used PayPal Recurring Billing before MoonClerk. It didn’t work well for us. Customers were constantly confused about whether or not they needed to use a PayPal account, it didn’t offer a lot of flexibility in billing options behind the scenes, and it was much harder to help people recover from payment hiccups. It became clear that we’d need to spend more and more time managing PayPal related issues as we grow, and that would slow us down.
What made you decide to use MoonClerk?
There are other recurring payment solutions out there we looked at, but most seemed to be geared towards large companies with complicated needs, with a price tag and complexity level to match.
MoonClerk is laser-focused on making recurring payments simple to collect without necessarily requiring a lot of technical setup and coding – while simultaneously having more than enough flexibility to set up billing options for a variety of situations.
What was your experience when switching and getting started with MoonClerk?
Pretty simple. I got a payment form up and running quickly. I started using it with customers on day 1.
What do you like about MoonClerk?
I like that MoonClerk offers a lot of flexibility and power in managing billing while still staying simple to use.
How has MoonClerk improved or helped your business?
We’ve tripled our business since starting to use MoonClerk, which is partly due to how MoonClerk has made it easy to manage billing so we can focus on other things.
