Michelle Bradley, co-founder of Java’s Compost, talks with us about how MoonClerk’s responsive customer support helped her decide to switch her business’s subscription payments to MoonClerk.
Can you tell us a little about what Javas’s Compost does?
We make composting easy and mess-free through our residential and commercial food scraps pickup service. We give busy people a way to manage their food waste in a sustainable way without having to do the work involved with a backyard composting system.
What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
I do everything from marketing to client relations to billing to sales to washing buckets and everything in-between.
How did you get started?
My husband, Java, and I were moved to start this business after realizing that food scraps were not actually trash but a valuable resource. While I was a reluctant composter at first, mostly due to fears that it would smell and attract rodents, I did a complete 360 after viewing the film, Dirt! The Movie. It’s very hard to throw food in the trash after seeing how important soil health is to our ability to grow nutritious food now and in the future. A crucial component to restoring our depleted soils is compost. With our pickup service, recycling your food scraps requires just about the same amount of effort as recycling your plastic bottles— minimal —so it becomes something many people feel they can do.
What have been some key factors in growing your business?
We have marketed and created a community that feels good about their efforts to reduce their food waste. Once you start composting, it is hard to stop. And when it is easy, it propels you to want to share that with other people so they can do it too. That is how we have grown our customer base.
What do you use MoonClerk for?
Our fee structure is based on a subscription model so our customers get charged on a recurring basis every 4 weeks as long as they are an active subscriber. MoonClerk has been instrumental in making this a seamless process from both our user’s experience and from our experience in the back end.
Did you have problems with your previous payment system?
The other payment system had a support team that was based in India making it extremely difficult to resolve issues in real time. It was very stressful because we couldn’t predict when we would get an answer to an issue we were having and, when you’re dealing with other people’s money you want to resolve any problems right away.
What made you finally decide to use MoonClerk?
We couldn’t risk not having support access in real time so we switched pretty quickly to MoonClerk once we found out that we weren’t going to get that with the other software.
What was your experience when getting started with MoonClerk?
MoonClerk has a very easy onboarding process and their customer service is very responsive.
