How Water of Life Uses MoonClerk to Provide Clean Water Around The World
Posted by Dodd Caldwell · Mar 18, 2014
Hallie Gillett, Communications Director for Water of Life, talks with us about her experience using MoonClerk to power the nonprofit’s online donations.
Can you tell us a little about what Water of Life does?
Water of Life is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that drills fresh water wells in Liberia and Sierra Leone in West Africa, and for the “Untouchable” villages of the Andhra Pradesh region of India. Giving people fresh water not only immediately reduces the infant mortality rate, improves the quality of life, and gives children the time for school instead of water-fetching, but gives value to the over-worked women of the village. We work alongside indigenous pastors and well-drilling crews to continue the ministry with ongoing evangelism, discipleship, and church-planting, meaning the humanitarian effort is leaving an eternal impact.
What are your responsibilities at Water of Life?
I’m the Communications Director for Water of Life. We have a very small staff in the United States, sending as many resources as we can to the field. Roland, our Founder and President, is the only other full-time employee. We also have a part-time office helper. So between us, we’re processing donations, keeping the website up-to-date, working on special events and fundraisers, and keeping the social media world spinning with the good news of what God is doing through the gift of fresh water around the world.
What have been some key factors in growing your organization?
People may learn about Water of Life at church, or through events, or our online presence, but our best support comes by word of mouth—people sharing about the impact Water of Life is having. In 2013, we were able to give more than 144,000 people the gift of fresh water and share the Gospel with all of them.
What do you use MoonClerk for?
We use MoonClerk for our online donations. Since we can customize the giving forms, it’s easy for people to make a one-time donation or sign up as a Thirst Quencher (monthly, automatic donations to Water of Life). We can also set up fundraisers for churches, schools, or people running marathons to raise money for Water of Life. We let people give a gift in honor or memoriam of a friend or loved one and people can even Adopt-A-Village through an online giving page—just $2,500 to give an entire community the gift of a brand new fresh water well that will save countless lives and change them forever.
Before MoonClerk, did you use another payment system? If so, what problems did you have with it?
Before MoonClerk, we used Authorize.net on our old website. It was harder to track donations, follow-up with donors, and process receipts. Also, customization wasn’t an option and the online giving was kind of clunky and frustrating to people who just wanted to give fresh water. You never want to lose a donor because the online checkout process is frustrating. And we’ve never had any complaints about MoonClerk.
What made you decide to use MoonClerk?
We went with MoonClerk because when we decided to redo our website, it was what Church Plant Media (the company that built our website) had set up as an easy-to-use partner for customizable church and ministry donations.
What was your experience when switching and getting started with MoonClerk?
I hate technology, but MoonClerk was very kind and user-friendly. MoonClerk’s cofounder, Dodd, walked me through getting our bank account linked for instant transfers, and showed me the easy steps to customize giving forms and create a user-friendly experience for our donors.
What do you like about MoonClerk?
I like that everything is customizable. It’s easy to edit, easy to personalize and easy to publish, share, and customize. Any changes are immediate. And it’s really easy to keep it looking like our “brand.” You don’t have to fear the checkout process doesn’t look like the ministry you’re giving to. We can make the giving forms look like they came from us.
How has MoonClerk improved or helped your business?
MoonClerk has made our lives easier. I believe people have an easier experience making online donations. And we really like the ease of control in creating our own giving forms.
