Can you tell us a little about what NISM does?
The National Institute for Social Media connects people who are interested in careers that require the knowledge and skills to manage an organization’s social media presence, with companies who are seeking to hire those people. We do this by offering a high-stakes, proctored social media certification exam that has been built by subject matter experts to assess the on-the-job skills that our candidates possess.
Those who pass this exam are considered “certified” and on average will see their earning power increase by 10-15% according to certification industry data.
How did you get started with NISM?
Having started my career in higher education, one of my main goals was to help students and those in career-transition make themselves more marketable to employers. Across industries, obtaining a professional certification is an excellent way to help demonstrate to employers that you possess the skills and passion for your profession that can increase their confidence in hiring those who obtain them.
When we started NISM, there was no unified industry certification in the area of social media. Those who wanted a job in the field would often be asked to learn on the job – which puts pressure on both the job candidate and the hiring managers. It was our goal to work with accredited colleges and universities to provide educational standards to point their students who have a passion for social media towards.
What have been some key factors in growing your business?
We have grown our business by adhering to quality education and certification standards. Too often you will see the phrase, “Get Certified!” when in actuality the program you are taking is not a certification at all, but rather a class or series of classes that may or may not help you find a job. That’s why we work with independent, volunteer subject matter experts who share the goal of helping establish education standards in social media, and guide our strategic direction.
What do you use MoonClerk for?
